Since 2011, Syria has been enduring a violent civil war that has forced more than 13 million Syrians from their homes, half of whom are internally displaced and living in overcrowded displacement camps and informal settlements. This situation was further compounded by an earthquake that struck the region in 2023. In December of 2024, the Assad regime was toppled by Rebel forces in Syria. With a transitional government in power, there is a new sense of hope for Syria’s future. However, the situation remains extremely fragile.
Fourteen years of conflict has created one of the worst humanitarian and displacement crises in the world. Roughly 16.5 million people are still in need of humanitarian assistance this year. In addition, nearly 90 percent of the Syrian population is living in poverty, struggling to access food, water, appropriate shelter, medical support and other basic needs. Access to electricity remains a major challenge, even in larger cities, with many areas receiving less than two hours of electricity per day. The healthcare sector is also nearing collapse due to corruption from Assad’s regime, deteriorating infrastructure, and a severe shortage of medical devices and medicines as a result of the war.
GlobalMedic has been working to deliver critical humanitarian aid including our Family Emergency Kits, Emergency Food Kits, medical supplies and essential medicines since 2014. In that time we have supported more than 459,900 Syrians in need delivering more than 57,000 FEKs, over 869,400 meals and 15,900 Emergency Food Kits, 52,000+ hygiene items, and more than 12.7 million medical supplies.
Our response is ongoing and to continue following our work please take a look at our website, www.globalmedic.ca.
