On August 26, 2026, flash flood in Nepal claimed around 1400 lives and 5000 people are reported missing. Though immediate relief materials were provided and people accommodated in temporary camps, shortage of water, non-availability of electricity, compounded by scattered dead bodies of domestic animals, limited toilets & sanitation facilities disrupted the daily life of the survived people.
The massive flash flood severely affected many communities. The devastating situation displaced thousands of families, disrupted essential services, and damaged homes & community infrastructure (including the destruction of power supply lines, and water pumping & distribution system). For families staying in damaged homes, temporary shelters, or other safe locations, the lack of reliable lighting became an additional challenge.
In response to this situation, ECCA will provide portable solar lights to flood-affected households where electricity services have been interrupted. Solar lights served as a practical and immediate source of lighting for families while regular electricity services remain unavailable. This support will make everyday activities easier during night time. The solar lights will be provided in coordination with the local stakeholders in the affected areas.
For families who have lost access to electricity, a reliable source of light can make a meaningful difference in their temporary living conditions. It can support basic household activities, enable children to study, facilitate movement after dark, and provide greater security for family members, particularly children, women, older people, and other vulnerable individuals.
