A Clean Solar Alternative to Kerosene Lamps, Nepal

In the project update submitted for the month of February, we reported about the situation faced by 52 children residing in an orphanage home Rejoice and Salvation in Trinity Service (Apologize for the mistaken name in earlier reporting) regarding the situation of power outage and use of candles for their study hours in evening after school. Hence, we initiated towards installing a solar LED lighting system in the orphanage to ease the children's study and support the education of the children. The above picture is from a room shared by a group of children – Mika, Laxmi and Abnigail.

After the installation of light, the students now do not need to use candles as an option for light during evening hours for their study. Mika told us that "My eyes used to hurt a lot when I used to study in the light of candles. Now, there is a lot of relief for me. My eyes feels relief during studying under solar light. In fact we don't feel that there is electricity power outage or loadshedding. Its not only me, all the children in the orphanage feels the same." Similarly, Abnigail told us that she along with her other colleagues' used to get scared to go to restroom during evening and night time due to power outage as it used to be very dark outside. But, now due to the installation of solar light system, children feel free to use the facilities without scaring.

I felt very happy when I listened to the feelings and feedback of the children in the orphanage. The smile in the face of children encouraged a lot to me to work more in this field and support the needy children and students in order to support their education.
