Amboavola Primary School Construction Completed

SEED is delighted to share that the construction activities at Amboavola Primary School were completed in November 2025, marking a significant milestone in improving access to safe, resilient education infrastructure for children in the community. Without your support, generosity, and continued commitment this achievement would not have been possible.

The pre-existing classroom building has been repaired alongside the construction of a three-classroom school building. Each of the classrooms have been fully furnished with student desk-benches, teachers’ tables and chairs, blackboards, and lockable cupboards. To strengthen the school’s resilience to increasingly severe weather conditions, SEED installed reinforced concrete siding on the roof of the school building, as well as cyclone-resistant concrete guttering and pillars. The upgraded facilities will not only enhance day-to-day learning conditions but will also support future growth of the student population, helping to secure long-term access to quality education for the community.

As an extension of the classroom school building, on-site teacher accommodation was also constructed, consisting of two rooms, one for an office and the other for a living area. SEED supplied essential furniture, including a desk, chair, and bedframe with mattress. This accommodation aims to support teacher livelihoods by reducing living expenses, and providing additional workspace, while also improving teacher retention.

WASH facilities were completed improving access to safe sanitation for the 267 students and eight teachers. Six gender-segregated VIP latrines were constructed, alongside a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system, MHM facility, and drinking and handwashing stations with behavioural nudges and murals to encourage healthy hygiene practices.

In December 2025, after project completion, a small opening ceremony was held, per Malagasy custom, with community leaders and representatives from SEED. A formal handover ceremony will be held in early 2026, which will represent the transfer of responsibility and maintenance back to the Amboavola community.

Building Bright Futures at Amboavola

Amboavola Primary School Progress

Since our last update in May, the Amboavola Primary School project has been steadily advancing, with completion on track for September 2025. What started as a foundation is now rising into a vibrant new learning space: the three-classroom building, including on-site teacher accommodation, has its walls complete and roof beams in place, with roof sheeting soon to follow. Interior rendering, painting, and furnishing will take place in the final phase, ensuring the school is ready to welcome students.

Repairs to the existing two-classroom block are next in line, with plans to install new roofing, restore cracked walls, and refresh its appearance. Once construction wraps up, 105 student desk-benches, teachers’ desks and chairs, cupboards, and blackboards will be installed across both buildings. These benches are made possible by the generous donations received during our 2025 Christmas Appeal.

Significant progress is also being made on six gender-segregated latrines and a Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) facility. The male latrine block has reached roof height, and once both roofs are installed, work will shift to finishing the interiors, tiling the MHM room, and adding drinking and handwashing stations. These will feature colourful WASH murals and pathways that encourage healthy behaviors.

Beyond bricks and mortar, the project is nurturing healthy habits. WASH education sessions have already reached students, teachers, and families, covering topics from handwashing to safe water use. A WASH management committee of school staff and community leaders has been formed to ensure these facilities are well cared for long after construction ends.

Looking forward, a solar energy initiative, Project Masoandro, is being assessed for installation later this year or early 2026. The Project would bring a solar installation, or “light library,” providing LED lights to students and teachers. This would eliminate the need for kerosene lamps, allowing a healthier way for students and teachers to review homework or lesson plans outside of school hours. Portable batteries will also be available at the teacher’s discretion, allowing increased time for productivity after the school day comes to an end. Meanwhile, our Sekoly Maintso programme has planted 399 Moringa trees to offset the carbon emissions of this construction and provide future nutrition for the community.

Amboavola Primary School: Construction Update

The construction of Amboavola Primary School began in March 2025, after preparatory work and a community-led groundbreaking ceremony in February. With the help of community members actively transporting materials to the site, the construction activities are now in full progress. The foundation for the new school building has been completed, and the walls are already up past window height. Despite challenges posed by the sandy terrain, latrine pit excavation is also complete, and structural works are ongoing.

In addition to classroom construction and repair activities, SEED plans to furnish the new and repaired classroom buildings. Each newly constructed three-classroom building will receive 75 student desk-benches, three sets of teachers’ desks and chairs, three lockable cupboards, and three blackboards. Additionally, the repaired building at Amboavola Primary School will receive 30 student desk-benches.

SEED began Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) training in March. These sessions are designed to build awareness, foster local ownership, and ensure sustainable use of the new facilities. SEED’s WASH officer began by delivering the initial triggering sessions to community members of Amboavola. Community triggering sessions are delivered when communities have not previously used improved WASH infrastructure, such as latrines. These sessions are useful in augmenting collective knowledge and skills around the sustained use of WASH facilities. The purpose of holding these discussions is to encourage communities to identify WASH-related concerns and coordinate their solutions when addressing them.

All lessons will be followed by refresher sessions to consolidate learning. These interactive lessons consist of best practice WASH principles and cover topics such as handwashing, water treatment, and latrine use and maintenance. The sessions will be delivered to teachers using a train-the-trainer approach, supporting teachers to deliver WASH education sessions to students in the future and promote the sustainable use of the new infrastructure.
