On September 30, a devastating 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu, Philippines. An Americares Emergency Response Team has immediately deployed to provide emergency relief and essential medicines - including pain relievers, antibiotics and medications for diabetes and hypertension.
The earthquake collapsed buildings, damaged roads and triggered landslides and power outages and resulted in at least 69 deaths. Hospitals in the worst-hit zones, including Bogo City, are overwhelmed, and rescue efforts are complicated by aftershocks, landslides, rain and blocked roads.
Americares is uniquely positioned to respond to this crisis. Already on the ground in Cebu, an Emergency Response Team was able to immediately deploy to provide emergency relief and essential medicines, like antibiotics, pain relievers, and treatments for diabetes and hypertension, provide mental health support for trauma-affected survivors, and are preparing to deploy a water purification system from Manila to restore safe drinking water.
When disaster strikes, we can deliver lifesaving aid and support long-term recovery for survivors. We know that the needs throughout this recovery will be immense, we anticipate expanding our response as needs evolve and access to affected communities improves. Americares is working closely with local health authorities and our partner network to identify and address emerging health gaps.
