In our area is a camp for internally displaced people, a very hard to live area. There are around 14125 people living in the camp of whom are 1700 elderly and 497 disabled people. These are the people in the most dire situation. They have had sub-standard quality food supplies and are severely malnourised and this is generating all sorts of health issues for them. Many people have died. We want to assist 2200 elderly and handicapped with 5 months cash support.
These people came from the western zone in Tigray during /after the 2020-2022 conflict. With Aid agencies greatly reducing their assistance these people are now suffering from hunger which is especially affecting the elderly and handicapped people as they have underlying ilnesses which are aggrevated by the malnutrition. Around 333 people have died over the past 6 months.
We have assessed the situation and discussed with the local leaders how we could help and the biggest gap is currently that people don't have cash, they need cash to buy water,charcoal/firewood, salt, sugar but also to go to the hospital and buy medicines. Flour and oil is currently being provided but flour alone is not nutritious enough to sustain them. By giving cash, we keep the dignity of the people and they can buy the missing essentials.
We have decided to initially support the elderly and handicapped for a period of 5 months after which we will review the situation. We expect to see a positive change in their situation.
