Summary

In Chile's Atacama Desert-one of the harshest places on Earth-young mothers face deep gender inequality, economic exclusion, and limited access to skilled work. This one-year program will train 20 mothers as certified industrial mechanics, combining technical education, safety certification, emotional support, and employability coaching. The project builds job-ready skills aligned with the mining industry in a remote region, helping families break cycles of multidimensional poverty.

Challenge

In Chile's Atacama Desert-one of the harshest and most remote regions on Earth-young mothers face deep gender inequality, economic exclusion, and limited access to skilled employment. Despite the region's reliance on the mining industry, women, especially mothers, are largely excluded from technical training and stable, well-paid jobs. Many are forced into informal or unstable work while caring for children, without access to childcare, emotional support, or professional networks.

Solution

This project closes the gap between opportunity and access by training 20 young mothers in the Atacama Desert as certified industrial mechanics. It combines technical education, safety certification, emotional support, and employability coaching in a one-year program aligned with the mining industry. By removing barriers faced by mothers, the project enables access to stable jobs, strengthens local workforce inclusion, and helps families break cycles of multidimensional poverty.

Long-Term Impact

This project advances ESG outcomes by expanding gender inclusion, workforce development, and economic resilience in the Atacama Desert. By training young mothers for skilled roles in the mining industry, it strengthens local talent pipelines, reduces inequality, and supports decent work in a remote region. Long term, it contributes to social stability, inclusive growth, and a more sustainable, locally rooted workforce aligned with responsible industry practices.
