Awareness & Partnership
By Umme Hamdani | Manager Communications & Coordination
Imkaan Welfare Organization partnered with Coded Minds to teach coding to the stateless children of Machar Colony. In 2021, 47 students were able to participate in App Development Course Age 6 - 13 years out of which 13 passed and were promoted to the second course of application development.
Due to Covid and seasonal employment, the majority of the children showed a lack of interest in the second course and therefore Imkaan Welfare Organization is changing the way coding will be taught to the children of Machar Colony. Coded Minds were also unavailable as they were rebranding their organization internally.
Imkaan now aims to set up a proper computer lab in the vicinity of Khel and create awareness regarding the need to learn coding by holding sessions in public and private schools and in Khel with the parents in the community.
We will be updating our donor with a revised plan by mid-march 2022.

Completion of App Development Course Age 6 -13 years
By Umme Hamdani | Manager Communications & Collaboration
Imkaan Welfare Organization in collaboration with Coded minds started teaching coding to the children of Machar Colony. To kick off the project an app development course for ages 6-13 years was implemented.
The course started off with a basic introduction to machine languages, programming languages, and App development. New topics were added gradually each week to make the progression of the course steady. The weekly breakdown of the curriculum is as follows:
- Week 1: Introductory Session with the Students
- Week 2: An Introduction to Programming Languages and how computers work
- Week 3: An introduction to code.org, a website for beginners to learn coding. We started off with AppLab as our platform to learn the basics of Application Development.
- Week 4: Getting familiar with logging in, opening levels, and playing games that help develop coding skills.
- Week 5: Learning how to drag, drop and effectively place the code in the right place.
- Week 6: First project: learning how to make a flashlight from scratch.
- Week 7: Learning how to insert images and sounds into an application.
- Week 8: Revision and Assessment
A group assessment format was followed, the students were divided into groups of 3. Each group had to perform an activity(s) within a time limit. The activities given were the same levels that were practiced over the period of 2 months. 49 students participated in the course out of which 17 passed and will be part of the next application development course.

Collaboration with Coded Minds
By Umme Hamdani | Manager Communications & Coordination
Imkaan Welfare Organization has collaborated with Coded Minds to implement 'The Digital Component' at Khel, a learning & recreational centre. Through Coded minds expertise, Imkaan is teaching the following courses to 100 children as a test run.
1) App Development Age 6 -13 years
2) Android App Development Age 13+
Facilitated by Coded minds, the course of App Development has already been implemented. With 49 children divided into 3 groups, the classes are conducted twice a week for one hour each. The initial classes are more focused on sharing knowledge about computer languages, the ease of using a tablet and creating an online account on Bitsbox.
With Bitsbox, students learn to program by creating fun apps that work on computers and gadgets like iPads and Android tablets. The Bitsbox website provides your students with a virtual tablet and a place to type their code. The experience starts with lots of guidance. It first shows learners exactly what to type, then quickly encourages them to modify and expand their apps by adding in new code.
We will continue to update our donors as the classes progress.
