Barbuda's Youth Media Apprenticeship Program
By Marisa Aurora Quiroz | Vice President of Programs
In September of 2017 Hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean island of Barbuda causing total devastation as the majority of homes and infrastructure were destroyed. Over the past few years Barbudan's have rebuilt their community and are advancing exciting community projects. The International Community Foundation continues to support sustainable development efforts and help grow local capacity. Through our visits and many conversations with local leaders, we have learned that an important area of focus has been to increase opportunities for youth on the island.
The Barbuda Youth Media Apprenticeship Program trains young people in the area of broadcasting with the objective of documenting local stories, histories, local news updates and other current events. They are the only media source for Barbundan's by Barbudan's and are providing important career pathways for youth on the island.
With ongoing donations from the GlobalGiving community, we have been able to provide $2,000 in general support to this important initiative. This is one of 12 community led projects supported by the Barbuda Resilience Fund held at ICF that continues to advance and strengthen the community of Barbuda. We are proud to partner again with BarbudanGo who is the fiscal sponsor of the Youth Media Apprenticeship Program as well as other amazing projects.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
