Updates on Barbuda Recovery & Conservation Trust

By International Community Foundation | National City, CA

In response to the devastation from Hurricane Irma, the San Diego-based Waitt Institute established the “Barbuda Recovery & Conservation Trust” to provide humanitarian assistance to the hurricane-ravaged island of Barbuda. The International Community Foundation administers this emergency relief fund pro-bono allowing 100% of donations to go directly to the people of Barbuda. The Trust so far has raised over $465,000 to support the people of Barbuda.

Since then funds have gone to provide immediate on the grounds needs of providing water and food to the people working on cleaning the damage caused. One grant has also been disbursed to Marine Ecosystems Protected Area Tust to move efforts forward for the recovery and restoration caused at the Codrington Lagoon National Park (CLNP) in Barbuda. MEPA Trust is partnering with the Department of Environment to clean up and restore the Lagoon; help Barbudans return to work; and help Barbudans return to their home of Barbuda.

Additonally, efforts are currently underway to provide support to:

  • Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society - provide shelter, food and aid to the animals of Barbuda Island
  • Swalings Antigua Limited - implement a swimming and football program to the children of Barbuda, in order to provide an active activity that will help the children
  • Global Emergency Relief, Recovery and Reconstruction - provide additional on the ground support
