On June 13-14, 2025, armed attackers suspected to be Fulani militants launched a horrific massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, killing over 200 people in a single night. Homes were burned, and thousands were displaced. Victims were burned alive, shot, or hacked with machetes as they fled; entire families were trapped in their homes and set ablaze. Among the survivors, 98 vulnerable women and children now face starvation and trauma with no shelter, while threats of renewed attacks loom.
Over 200 people were killed in Yelewata, Benue State, on June 13-14, 2025. Survivors mostly women, elders and children lost their homes, family, and belongings overnight. Their houses were burnt, and they escaped with nothing. This project will relocate 98 survivors, covering one-year rent, food, clothing, and basic support. With fresh threats of more attacks, urgent help is needed to move them to safer towns and protect their lives, as militants reportedly regroup near the border with Nasarawa.
The project will relocate 98 survivors to safer towns. It will provide one-year rent support, food, clothing, transport, and small cash assistance for basic needs. This will remove them from danger and give time to recover and rebuild their lives. Special care will be given to women-led households, elderly & orphaned children to ensure equitable support for the most vulnerable.Medical care will also be provided to survivors with injuries, including machete wounds and other attack-related trauma.
This project gives survivors a fresh start in safer areas. Instead of sleeping outdoors or in destroyed villages, they will have a roof, food, and some stability. With time, they can find jobs or return to school. The one-year support will prevent long-term hunger, begging, or unsafe migration. It gives them a chance to recover and stay away from places still at risk of attack or repeated loss. Without intervention, survivors risk abduction or death in unsafe temporary shelters.
