More than 1,000 children helped to go to school

Hello again from Cambodia.

I can’t believe it is June already and almost half the year is over already! The time sure does go by fast, doesn’t it? Before any more time goes by I just wanted to write and say thank again you for supporting M’Lop Tapang through the donation you made in the past. Because of people like you we continue to be able to help disadvantaged Cambodian girls and boys here; children like Buntha*.

Buntha was a just a small boy when he moved with parents and seven sibling from a neighboring province to Sihanoukville several years ago. Like many poor rural families, they moved here hoping for a better life. When they first arrived here the entire family worked on the streets collecting plastic bottles and tins cans to recycle. Their situation improved slightly when his father started earning an income as a motorcycle taxi driver and Buntha was able to start going to school.

A while ago, our Outreach Team social worker was surprised to see Buntha working on the streets again. Buntha told us that he really wanted to go to keep going to school but his family could not afford it. Although public school is officially free for all Cambodian children, families are still required to pay for school uniforms, books and supplies. For many of the poorest families even these costs prevent them from sending their children for an education.

After our Outreach and Education teams met with Buntha’s family it was decided that he would benefit from being in M’Lop Tapang’s “Back to School” program. The programs helps families in sending their children to school by providing all the necessary school supplies, as well as regular follow up by our social workers. The program is currently helping 1,050 Cambodian boys and girls to stay in school.

Buntha, now 14 years old, is doing great in school. He is in Grade 5 and just last month scored in the top 10% in his class. After he gets home after school he helps his mother and father with housework and every night spends time teaching his younger brothers and sister. In the future he wants to be a policeman when he grows up.

Helping families better provide for their children

Hello from M'Lop Tapang,

I wanted to thank you again for your donations that are allowing us to help thousands of Cambodian children and families here in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

We all know that children grow up best in loving families, but sometimes even the best of parents need support. By supporting poor families, children are more often protected from violence and abuse, do not live on the street, or face the risk of being separated from their parents and placed in institutions.

Your donations have helped mothers like Sreyroth (name changed for confidentiality), a single parent with three small children aged 12, 10, and 5 years old.

Before Sreyroth used to work at a local garment factory. With no one else to look after her children while she went to work, Sreyroth's oldest daughter, who was not even a teenager yet, had to stay at home all day to look after the younger ones. Sreyroth is now one of the mothers in our Home Based Production program. The program helps poor families develop a steady, safe source of income generation. Mothers and fathers completing a sewing training program are provided with sewing machines to work with from their homes. The products they produce are sold in the Tapang’s Shops and other outlets.

Sreyroth now earns $60-80/month sewing products from her home where she can work flexible hours and is able to be with her youngest child. Her two oldest children are now in a classroom everyday studying at M’Lop Tapang’s Education Center and getting a chance for a better future.

Hello from Cambodia and thank you again

Sok and Samnang are now going to public school

Hello from Cambodia!

As we enter into a new year I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you again for your support in 2014 and the online donation you made to our project ‘Better Futures for Cambodian Children and Youth'.

I know that sometimes people wonder when they make a donation if it really does help. The simple answer is yes, it really does. Without your support M’Lop Tapang would not be able to reach out and help as many children as we do. Currently we are working with more than 4000 children and 1500 families in the local area.

Two of the children we work with are 13-year old Sok* and 14-year old Samnang* (*names changed for confidentiality). Both boys come from very poor families and did not have the chance to start school when they should have.

For the last three years they have been attending classes in the “Bridging Program” at M’Lop Tapang’s Education Center. The program, with a curriculum developed in collaboration with the Department of Education, helps children and youth who have never been to school (or have been out of school for a long time) catch up with their studies. The goal is one day students in the program will be reintegrated into the local public school system at a grade level suitable for their age.

We are very proud of both Sok and Samnang who recently passed exams testing their grade level, have left the “Bridging Program” at M’Lop Tapang and are both now in Grade 7 at a local public school. We know that because they are getting an education they will have a better future. The boys now join more than 1000 other Cambodian children and youth in our “Back to School” program which provides students with books, school uniforms, and social support.

Education activities like our “Bridging Program” and the “Back to School” program are just a couple of the ways that M’Lop Tapang works with children and families.
