On August 26, 2026, flash flood in Nepal claimed around 1400 lives and 5000 people are reported missing. Though immediate relief materials were provided and people accommodated in temporary camps, shortage of water, non-availability of water disinfection system, compounded by scattered dead bodies of domestic animals, limited toilets & sanitation facilities created a big threat of health epidemic. Lack of proper cooking facilities has created a need of modular firewood efficient cooking stoves.
The massive flash flood severely affected many communities. The devastating situation displaced thousands of families, disrupted essential services, and damaged homes & community infrastructure (including the destruction of power supply lines, and water pumping & distribution system). As a result, there was high risk of spread of waterborne diseases following the flooding. Also, lack of proper cooking facilities forced the affected villagers to eat only pre-cooked packaged food items.
ECCA provided water filter & chlorine solution (sodium hypochlorite, 6gm/liter). Chlorine solution is produced by ECCA by using Swiss WATA Technology through electrolysis of common salt solution, and is used for water disinfection & for sanitizing purposes, helping to maintain a safer and hygienic environment. Orientation on personal hygiene and on the proper use of chlorine solution is also provided. The improved "Envirofit" cookstove consumes very less firewood and can be easily moved around.
ECCA aims to contribute to disease prevention and improved hygiene conditions during the emergency response and recovery period. The use of modular improved cookstove will contribute towards easy access to cooking, improved hygienic behavior and better health.
