On August 26, 2026, Nepal experienced massive floods that severely affected many communities, particularly in Rasuwa and Nuwakot Districts. The devastating situation resulted in more than 1,400 loss of lives, around 5,300 people reported missing, displacement of families, extensive damage to homes and community infrastructure, and disruption of essential services. Many families have been forced to seek temporary shelter in safer locations.
Considering the increased risk of water contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases following the flooding, ECCA initiated support for the affected communities by providing chlorine solution (sodium hypochlorite) for disinfection and hygiene purposes. The chlorine solution for this response is being produced by ECCA it its lab, building on its long experience in safe drinking water promotion and the use of electro-chlorination technology.
Chlorine solution is particularly important in temporary holding centers, where displaced individuals and families are staying, and access to adequate sanitation facilities is limited. It can be used for disinfecting drinking water, cleaning toilets, floors, surrounding areas, and other commonly used spaces, helping to maintain a safer and more hygienic environment for children, families, and other vulnerable people staying in the centers.
ECCA is coordinating with local stakeholders in the flood-affected areas to identify the immediate needs and distribute the chlorine solution where it is most required. The technical team also provides necessary orientation on the appropriate use of chlorine solution to ensure that the materials are used safely and effectively. Through this support, ECCA aims to contribute to disease prevention and improved hygiene conditions during the emergency response and recovery period.
We are thankful for your continued support, which enables us to respond to the urgent needs of communities affected by this devastating disaster and contribute to safer and healthier temporary living conditions.
