Thank you so much for your support for our farm project. It's giving young and old alike the opportunity to live a sustainable life surrounded by love and dignity.
Among the 27 residents living at our 'Hamlet of Courage' is Atul, originally from the backwaters of Kerala. He discovered he was HIV+ when his wife passed away from a related illness in 2003. Working as a motor mechanic in a car showroom, it wasn’t until he was involved in a motorcycle accident while holidaying in Goa in 2014 that he felt the full impact of the stigma surrounding his HIV diagnosis. Immobilised and receiving substandard treatment based on his HIV status he called his brother who lives in Maharashtra. He soon arranged for him to be moved to our hospital which is dedicated to free and unbiased treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and as soon as Atul was back on his feet, albeit with the aid of a walker, he moved to our farm.
With no previous farming experience, he was a fast learner and is now responsible for sowing, nurturing and harvesting our crops. He particularly likes working in our polyhouse where he can tend to his favourite foods, spinach, methi and coriander. He also drives to our Rehab Center three times a day dropping off the latest harvest and dairy deliveries and returning with the fruits of his labours transformed into healthy, organic meals to feed his fellow farmworkers.
In December 2015, the widower also took part in our annual World AIDS Week matchmaking programme where we invite PLHA to help them find a marriage partner. He found his match Sarika and they were married a few weeks later. They both now live at our farm. When asked why he hasn’t returned to his tropical home state, he says: “I feel accepted and know that I will be looked after here. When I was in hospital in Goa I knew I was being judged and mistreated because of my HIV. More importantly it’s a really positive family environment, full of love.”
