Ebola has reached Mali, but our children are doing well and we have implemented special steps to keep them from being contaminated. With this report, we are closing this project. As you already know, Fatoumata was deemed too young to go through the cataract surgery at this time and is following yearly assessments and evaluation to determine when she is ready for the surgery. In October Necker’s hospital refunded the prepaid fees for Fatoumata’s surgery. For the remainder of the funds, we are offering to all our donors the following options : (1) return funds to them by proportion of donation to remaining funds; (2) the latitude to use the remaining funds to support Fatoumata’s future project only; (3) the latitude to use the remaining funds to support other ACFA health care projects; or (4) the latitude to use the remaining funds to support any ACFA project. Please let us know how you would want us to proceed: kadiatou@acfacorp.org. For donors who we don’t hear from we will use option (4). We are hoping to have Fatoumata’s next assessment completed before the end of the year with a visit to Bamako of philanthropic optometrists. At that time we will be informed of her needs for this year.

Summer update

Fatoumata is doing well with her glasses. Her next appointment for the doctor’s evaluation is in November. At that time we will be informed of her needs for this year. In the meantime we have a volunteer helping us to recoup the funds prepaid to Necker Hospital in Paris. We will keep you informed of what the outcome is. Thank you very much for your continued support.
This summer 3 of our children were admitted to the youth Malian Federation of basketball, and 2 of those 3 are currently playing in the youth championship of Bamako. The 3rd did not get to participate this year because of a broken leg, but will next year. 3 others received taekwondo medals (1 gold and 2 silver) during Bamako’s championship. 5 children passed to the next belt during this year’s Bamako’s Taekwondo’s tournament.
In April we were blessed with site visit in Bamako from Director Andy from the Segal Family Foundation, and we were able to show him the operations. In Jul, our Director of Operations in Bamako, attended the Segal Family Foundation’s annual meeting in Arusha, Tanzania. What a collaborative and learning opportunity that was!!! His overall impressions were outstanding. This opportunity allowed him to discover other operations on the continent, and discuss with other leaders confronted to similar challenges, network with other nonprofit leaders and learn from each others’ experience, understand donors’ requirements, re-energized with regards to goals, and more deeply understand human resources requirements.

2nd semester report

In November, we were blessed with the visit to Bamako of a team of volunteer doctors from the Utah Valley Eye Center who provided free eye care services to those in need. Fatoumata was examined by 3 doctors: Dr. Matthew Parsons, Dr. Frank Edmunds and Dr. Paul Olson. All three have concluded that at her age, and with her current vision of 20/400 with the myopic correction, Fatoumata will need a cataract surgery in the future. The doctors have promised to provide annual consultations to Fatoumata during their visit in Bamako before she is ready for the operations. The year was ended with a visit to Bamako by one of our board of directors, Alpha, who spent Christmas and New Year with the children in Bamako. Please donate today. We have raised 58% of the funds needed to fully fund Fatoumata’s operations costs. Our work is only possible because of your generosity. Fatoumata is in danger of losing her sight.
