By Conor O'Leary | Project Leader
We are delighted to announce that we have reached our funding target for our new patient transport vehicle.
Thank you to everyone who helped us to achieve our target. Your support is very much appreciated.
The vehicle will be used by Bray Cancer Support Centre's team of volunteer drivers to transport cancer patients from their homes in North Wicklow & Dublin to various hospitals & Cancer Treatment Centre’s in Dublin. These include St.Vincent’s Hospital, St,Lukes Hospital, Blackrock Clinic, St. Michael’s Hospital, Beaumount Hospital, Blackrock Day Hospice and St. James Hospital.
The vehicle was purchased as a result of grants from a number of sources including Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s Hug Charity Initiative, Bray Town Council, The Hospital Saturday Fund and Dublin Bus. The insurance for the vehicle is being sponsored by Axa Insurance.
The Campaign for the new vehicle was also supported by Broadcaster Pat Kenny and Leinster & Ireland rugby player Ian Madigan.
A significant contribution from the public also helped fund the vehicle.
Every year, Bray Cancer Support Centre's volunteer drivers provide over 640 patient transport trips using their own cars. The new vehicle will now be used for this purpose.
Speaking about the launch, Founder & CEO of Bray Cancer Support Centre Veronica O’Leary says ‘We introduced our volunteer transport service over 15 years ago in response to the demand from our clients to provide this very practical and valuable service. We are delighted to now offer this service to a wider number of clients. The service will be entirely funded by Bray Cancer Support Centre’s own fundraising efforts.’
Mary, a client user of the Centre’s Patient transport service says ‘We rely on Bray Cancer Support Centre to bring my Mother into hospital for her treatment. I can’t drive and have no other family to do this. The hospital is unable to help us with transport due to cut backs. If it weren’t for Bray Cancer Support Centre helping us I don’t think my Mother would go to her treatment’
Bray Cancer Support Centre provides a range of free support services to people in the Dublin & Wicklow areas. They operate a busy Drop-In Centre where services such as counselling, complimentary therapies, cancer rehabilitation programmes and services for children and young people affected by cancer are provided.
