Summary

Our goal is to break gender norms in sports. In what has historically been a male-dominated sport, soccer - we will provide twice-weekly indoor soccer classes for 240 female students across 6 elementary schools in Diadema, Brazil. In addition, we will utilize safe spaces in schools to provide these young girls with educational workshops centered around women's health & hygiene, gender equality and empowerment.

Challenge

Brazil is known as the country of football/soccer but this is not true for girls. Their participation is barred for two main reasons: 1. gender norms - soccer is seen as a boy's sport and girls who play often suffer discrimination even in their families; 2. violence - according to the Brazilian Map of Violence, in 2021, there were 35,735 recorded rapes of children under the age of 14, 85% of whom were girls.

Solution

ACER Brazil with its team of female coaches will give twice weekly female futsal classes as an extracurricular activity in local elementary schools and will give the girls fruit at every session as nutritional support as they are all from very underprivileged homes. Our safeguarding officer will also run workshops with the girls on personal hygiene, female physical development and self-care and they should carry this knowledge into their family homes.

Long-Term Impact

The project will give 240 girls the opportunity to do quality physical exercise, led by a strong female role model, in a safe space which will develop their self esteem and confidence to break with societal gender norms. This also provides them with improved physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and fundamental knowledge for their individual development as teenagers and young women.
