Project Report | Sep 12, 2012
Music and Soccer Teachers

By Alexandra Tamara | Director

Over the last three months we have continued working hard to meet the kids educational needs by working to improve writing and reading skills. This has been a hard task, but we have very good results with most of the children – at least they are happy discovering they are capable of improving their skills. We are very satisfied because they are changing the way they think, opening up to the idea that they can do things in a different way.

In these last trimester we did some good activities and projects with the kids. We received some musical instruments as donations from collection that a teenager in a Miami school made. So far we have 2 electric guitars, 2 acoustic guitars, and 1 piano. Without a music instructor, so far we’ve done fun activities were the kids have to make music instruments out of recycled material. Now we are looking for money to hire a music teacher work regularly at Pintando Caminos, maybe even to help the kids form  musical groups that play Salsa or Cumbia!

We are also pleased to report that we received a donation in the form of soccer uniforms and soccer balls. With the soccer school currently on hold, we have taken the children to a hill about 40 minutes from Pintando Caminos where there is plenty of open space with grass for the kids to play. Until the soccer school starts up again this has been a good activity to keep up the enthusiasm for soccer and physical exercise.

We are still trying to find and hire a soccer coach for Pintando Caminos and re-open the soccer school. It’s important that the kids learn to enjoy and spend free time doing good things because the potential for involvement in gang activity or different kinds of addictions is very real – the key is giving them alternative opportunities that are fun and healthy.

An external foundation donated some glasses for the children as well, which was nice. At this time we’ve already begun preparations for the big Halloween party. For Christmas we always throw a big celebration where we have presents for every child, so we’ve started the planning for the Christmas gifts as well.
