Challenge

At Akili School For Girls in Kisumu, Kenya, domestic violence, early pregnancies, early marriage, displacements, inability of school to meet reopening requirements and financial difficulties being faced by parents who have lost their sources of income are likely to prevent girls from returning to school when they reopen. This may see the most marginalized girls drop out of school entirely to support their families or get married. Dropping out of school puts the future of the girls at risk.

Solution

This project will mitigate the risk of families keeping their girls out of school by providing nutritious meals, books, sanitary pads, school uniforms, shoes, life skills education and all they need tostay in school and learn. The project will also support 11 teachers/staff ensuring the girls have access to the best care to allow them to grow and thrive as well as offer scholarships to girls graduating to high school.

Long-Term Impact

This project provide one year of education to 60 underprivileged rural girls, allowing 100% return to school after prolonged school closures. It will also provide 10 scholarships to high school girls and lifeskills education to 500 girls from partner schools. This will keep them on track to complete their education and achieve their full potential. Educated girls will earn more income and increase their odds of breaking the vicious circles of poverty in their communities.
