The School in the Displacement Camp
By Jacob Atem | Project Leader

Dear friends,
In 2022 we built a school in the displacement camp. Many of the children had not been to school for years due to the floods destroying their schools and the Covid pandemic halted schools from opening. When we started we had 50 students and 3 teachers. Today we have 235 students and 6 teachers. The photo shows one of the classrooms that the parents and teachers built. During the rainy season, which lasts for several months, the rain and winds will destroy it. We are trying to find the funds to build more permanent classrooms. At one time Mangalla had 13 primary schools. Ours is the only one still open. There are thousands of children in the camp who want to go to school, but we do not have the ability to do this.
We are thankful for your support in helping us provide a clinic for the medical needs of the families. We do not charge for these services. We have hundreds each week that visit the clinic. Your support is making a difference in the lives of these people who are dealing with so many challenges.
Sincerely and with joy,
Jacob

Cholera Outbreak in South Sudan
By Jacob Atem | Project Leader

Dear friends,
South Sudan has faced many challenges since it became the world's youngest country in 2011. For the last five years, flooding has displaced thousands of people. Since the waters have not receded, more people are leaving the small islands of dry land that they have been living on and moving to displacement camps. The Sudan crises has seen about a million flee to South Sudan for safety and putting a strain on their already limited resources.
The flooding and lack of clean water and proper sanitation has resulted in a cholera outbreak. As of April 2025, there have been 115,513 cases and 2,400 deaths in Africa from cholera. South Sudan has seen the highest number of casualties from cholera of all the African countries with 48,726 cases and 919 deaths. Our medical staff in the Mangalla IDP camp have been providing training in how to prevent cholera and giving vaccines. Because of the cuts in aid to humanitarian organizations, many areas in South Sudan are without clinics. This is only making the situation worse.
We are thankful for our friends’ support in helping us with this new crisis. Please keep the medical staff and families in South Sudan in your thoughts and prayers.
Best always,
Dr. Jacob Atem

South Sudan is facing many challenges. The floods have destoryed the crops. The Sudan crisis has resulted in about a million fleeing into South Sudan that has limited resources to help these refugees. Malnutrition is widespread across the country. Now a new crisis began last year. A cholera outbreak is threatening thousands.
"In the past one week, 2,505 new suspected cases including 300 rapid diagnostic positive cases were reported. The total number of new cholera related deaths reported during the week was 64. • From 28 September 2024 to 24 January 2025, there have been 24,418 cases including 475 deaths." A report from the World Health Organzation (WHO).
Next week I will be traveling to South Sudan to assist the medical staff in our two clinics. They have given vaccinations to the people in the camp. I will be meeting with the members of the Health Cluster, Juba University and others in the country who are working on containing this outbreak.
I am thankful for friends who come along side us and help us purchase the needed medicines and supplies. Thank you for being a blessing to the world's forgotten people,
With thankfulness for your partnership,
Jacob
