Dear friends,
Did you know that in Latin America and the Caribbean, 63% of pregnancies each year are unintended? That is equal to about 10,000,000 pregnancies annually. While unintended pregnancies can be a happy surprise, they can also cause significant and unexpected change in a woman’s life. In Latin America and the Caribbean, an estimated 10,000,000 women have unmet need for contraceptives. This is why, at Women for Conservation, our goal is to provide voluntary, free family planning services to those who face the biggest barriers to its access. We partner with the local sexual and reproductive health organization, ProFamilia, to bring services to families living in rural areas where transportation and cost are the biggest barriers to receiving this life-changing care.
While we typically think of contraceptives as women’s responsibility, a vasectomy is also a safe and cost-effective form of family planning. It is a simple procedure and is actually much less expensive than tubal ligation (female sterilization). Yet, it is underused as a family planning tool around the world. While we provide most of our services to women, we are committed to sharing education and access to family planning methods with men, too. “Vasectomy — one of the safest and most effective long-term contraceptive methods — represents more than a medical procedure. It symbolizes partnership. It is a visible act of shared commitment to family well-being and gender equity”, Women for Conservation president, Sara Lara, says.
Since 2022, Women for Conservation has provided 138 voluntary vasectomies to men in rural Colombia, and we have more than 60 men on our waitlist to receive care. Through our family planning brigades in partnership with ProFamilia, we continually strive to reach more families who wish to receive these services, but we need your help! Through your donations, you can make an enormous difference in the lives of women and men in rural Colombia. With family planning care, families can better plan when to have children and how many to have. This choice opens doors for families, allowing them to pursue education, careers, and financial stability before having children. Furthermore, voluntary family planning is a low-cost tool to fight climate change and biodiversity loss. Slowed population growth that would naturally result from global access to contraceptives and reproductive care would also result in reduced carbon emissions — a reduction of as much as 68.9 million tons between 2020 and 2050.
We thank you for being part of this solution! Your support means the world to us and to the communities we work with. Let’s make reproductive care available to all — women and men — together.
Thank you,
The Women for Conservation Team.
