Summary

Children with severe disabilities are perceived to be a burden, as they require continual care which prevents caretakers from seeking employment and engaging in meaningful activities. Katalemwa seeks to build a day care centre to support annually 50 children with severe disabilities like cerebral palsy, neurological and multiple conditions. This day care will retain these children as their Parents/caretakers go to work, at school or engage in other activities.

Challenge

60% of the children rehabilitated at Katalemwa have severe disabilities like cerebral palsy, intellectual and learning disorders and multiple disabilities. These can't be admitted in inclusive schools therefore their parents/caretakers become prisoners in their homes. As they can't work or participate in community issues because of the relentless childcare which negatively impacts family income. Masaka district has 89 nursery/daycare centres but non caters for children with severe disabilities.

Solution

Katalemwa plans to build a day care centre for children with severe disabilities and 50 children will be supported annually for parents/caretakers that are employed, in school and have other responsibilities to undertake. At the centre, Children will be engaged in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing care and taught activities of daily living. This day care centre will have a playroom, therapy rooms, a kitchen, living room, reception, play ground, toilets and bedrooms.

Long-Term Impact

The project will support 50 children with disabilities annually, the services offered will improve their functionality, self esteem, social skills, independent living skills and participation. The caretakers of these children will utilize time when their children are at the center to engage in economic activities that will improve the income of the families; reducing poverty rates among families of children with disabilities, Improve community participation and self esteem for the caretakers
