Our project aims to support over 45 disadvantaged children and youths in Crete, Greece in receiving an education. Refugee children confront huge obstacles and challenges to receive the education and support they need to have a better future and find employment. COVID-19 is making it even harder. We provide in person and online practical assistance and lessons preparing children for a brighter future, work and better integration. We need your donation to insure urgent and impactful support!
The Covid-19 pandemic has added further pressure on some the most vulnerable people in Europe. Refugees and asylum seekers in Greece are waiting in limbo for their asylum claims with little access to services or formal education. Children are paying the highest price: only circa 28% are enrolled in formal education(Unicef). For many, receiving an education now is the only opportunity they will have to improve their lives. Help us bring dignified support to people in this time of heightened need.
Crete For Life aims to provide families with infants and school age children with practical support, when this is not supplied otherwise. The pandemic has closed schools but it has accelerated the use of digital technology. We support children to study online (providing WIFI or data on their family's mobile phone, and ideally provide every child with tablets or computers) or at school (books etc.). Even during lockdown volunteers and teachers provide Greek lessons and a constant online support.
Global refugees issues are complex, but we believe that every child has the right to safety, well being and education. Even more so if they are living in our communities. Learning for displaced children is essential: many of them have never gone to school and might otherwise have no other chance of an education. By supporting them in their studies, these children will also learn and improve the Greek language, and they will facilitate the integration of their own families in their new community
