WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO RESTORE AND REBUILD RAINFOREST?
A great big nursery.
In 2020, we decided to focus on the propagation of trees to help with rainforest rehabilitation, habitat restoration, and to help mitigate Climate Change. To do this we realised that we needed to drastically increase our tree propagation capacity from 12,000 trees per annum at the current nursery.
After much planning, in April this year we received confirmation from the council that our Development Application had been unanimously approved. Now, after a successful appeal we have the funds to purchase the equipment and consumables to scale up the new nursery for the coming year.
We put the call out with the goal of raising $220,000, and once again you went above and beyond, raising a total of $235,533. Thanks to you we were able to proceed with the purchase of items such as tubes, fertiliser, seed collecting equipment and benches for propagation.
All these items and supplies will help us scale up as we aim to grow 75,000 in the first year of operations to facilitate our rainforest restoration efforts and supplying trees to partner organisations.

Operational plans:
We are working to make the Daintree the only rainforest in the world that is GROWING, not shrinking. The new Nursery will make this happen with the aim to grow 1 million trees in 10 years. And with our Partners for Protection on our side, we will make this happen:
In the capable hands of Allen Sheather – Nursery Project Manager - we’ve been making tremendous progress on-site, including: pouring the concrete slabs necessary for the build (one for the office smoko building, one under the production area and another forming the base for the potting mix holding bay); removing the last remnants of the old aircraft hangar; and digging the trenches in order to lay the power cabling and install the power supply to the pump house (once complete we can begin installing the irrigation system).
On an administration front, our Operational Works Plan has been accepted by the Douglas Shire planning department and our Wastewater Management Plan has also been finalised and is before council. We now need to submit an erosion control plan to ensure our earthworks do not cause environmental damage.
At a time when world news often feels overwhelming and hopeless, the new nursery offers a tangible and simple solution for action … your support has helped us scale up the nursery, creating a positive impact for generations to come.
Thank you!
