This project is building a basic school for children strongly affected by poverty in the fishing community Kokrobite, Ghana. Aside from free of cost and high quality education it daily provides a healthy freshly cooked meal and offers creative activities. The new school building will contain 9 classrooms, an IT-Lab, a library, a kitchen, a dining hall, inclusive washrooms, an office space, a school garden and playground. 216 students and their parents from 5 communities are the beneficiaries.
In the fishing community of Tuba and Kokrobite, one in eight children between the ages of 6 and 14 is either not enrolled in primary school, not attending school or is currently dropping out. This is due to the rising cost of school fees, while most of these parents are low-income earners who trade in small food crops. Earning as little as (1-2) per day, children tend to support their parents financially by working during school hours.
If built, the school would provide free education for 216 students each year. Providing them with everything from learning materials to a nutritious meal every day would ease the financial burden on their parents. Through the concept of small classes and individualised, varied learning, students from disadvantaged backgrounds will benefit from a high quality education. The inclusion of modern subjects such as ICT and critical thinking would prepare students for the future world of work.
In addition to the standard curriculum, graduates from Arise, will be able to think critically, swim, communicate in a foreign language (German/French), scratch code and advocate for themselves. These are skills they will pass on to their siblings and their own children. Not only will this improve their chances of getting a job, but it will also have a ripple effect on their community. In the long term, this will increase their chances of escaping poverty.
