Summary

Un Mundo's Literacy Connections program empowers people in rural communities of northern Honduras to transform their own educational opportunities - by training local citizens to teach literacy workshops, lead book clubs, invent dynamic story-time activities, and even perform literacy-themed community theater. By providing training, resources, dynamic activities, and a regional library, you can help put the power of learning into local people's hands!

Challenge

Poverty/illiteracy go hand in hand. With a 65% poverty rate, over 25% of Hondurans cannot read. In an Un Mundo survey, teachers reported that access to books was the biggest school need. In rural areas, books are rare. In the Cangrejal Valley, only three in five residents have a primary school education. All existing Un Mundo literacy resources/programming are held in a small room in the high school. A locally run library board plans to build a new regional library and needs funds to build it.

Solution

Literacy rates will be boosted with a regional library with after-school tutoring, adult literacy classes, computer lab, story time, and teacher training. A mobile library that travels by "burro" to isolated, rural areas will provide books and literacy classes to indigenous people who are eager to learn. Education is the key to eliminating poverty and reading is critical to learning. A locally run library board runs the program and is trained in all facets of running a local library.

Long-Term Impact

Increased literacy rates will result in better educated people who can widen their options for jobs and employment that can reduce the current 65% poverty rate. The program will also increase school attendance and graduation rates. Land has been donated by the community to construct a permanent library space next to the elementary school.
