Yachana Foundation is dedicated to providing community-based solutions to poverty and environmental degradation in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Currently Yachana, "place for learning" in Kichwa, educates, inspires, and empowers 200 youth of the Amazon to have a positive impact on the eco-sustainability of their region. Help us build a 1,787 square foot, thatched roof classroom and an aquaponic demonstration farm for co-cultivation of plants and fish in a recirculating environment.
Farm incomes are less than $2/day and 150,000+ acres of rainforest are lost every year. The educational needs of mestizos and indigenous from six different ethnic groups in 80+ communities are not being met through conventional, rote memory instruction. Our teaching-through-example vocational training such as the aquaponics project will help more than 800 people yearly improve their lives, nutrition and incomes. Young people need to remain in the Amazon and help protect the rainforest.
Yachana Foundation will provide an enriched learning environment with classes in English, computers, nutrition, tourism and environment in the new classroom. The aquaponic infrastructure and other farming initiatives will provide the hands-on instruction and experience that will reinforce classroom learning through practical applications that can be replicated in their communities to improve agricultural techniques, nutrition, generate income and preserve the rainforest.
Your donations toward building the Eco-sustainable Learning Center will provide continued long-term educational and environmental opportunities. Funding this project will educate more than 3500 students over the next decade to enable them to help care for the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, provide for themselves, their families and their communities.
