Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,
We are always deeply thankful for your generosity and support for our efforts in Fiji.
Today, we want to share OISCA Staff's input into local resilience training.
Through this project, we have continuously worked towards the resilient recovery of cyclone-affected areas and initiatives to enhance overall resilience disasters in Fiji. Meanwhile, the frequency of natural disasters is increasing year by year. Just this month, OISCA’s own office in Fiji was hit by a cyclone, resulting in a long power outage and damage, including a destroyed signboard.
Amid such frequent disasters, there is a growing local recognition regarding the importance of disaster risk reduction initiatives and acquiring related knowledge. We at OISCA cooperate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to implement a DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) training course at their youth training center.
Notably, OISCA’s National Coordinator - Mr. Tevita - who has been leading mangrove-planting, is applying his project experience to educate Fijian youth on disaster prevention: from developing training materials to teaching in the classroom. To provide practical experience, he sometimes takes them out to the project site so they can experience mangrove planting firsthand.
Mr. Tevita shares: “While the need for disaster preparedness education in schools and communities is growing amid frequent disasters, raising awareness is no easy task. Many people simply accept floods as a normal part of life”. “However, by passing down the knowledge and experience we have built through OISCA’s activities, I want to do everything in my power to empower our youth to protect their communities from future disasters.”
Going forward, we are committed to raise awareness on disaster prevention while continuing to protect local communities through coastal forest creation.
