Summer time for Bulgarian Creative Writing Competi

By Dimitar Tsekov | Executive Director

Summer is not an active period for the Bulgarian Creative Writing Competition (BCWC). This is the time when the CORPLUS staff reviews and updates the competition rules and protocol, as well as preparing interesting and provoking prompts for the next campaign of the competition.

The 2023 competition showed that after the COVID years the number of the participating schools and students reached the pre-COVID levels and we are glad to report that BCWC is one of the most popular competitions among Bulgarian students.

Why is it so popular? Why is it so important for the students? Herer are several reasons:

  1. Creative writing gives an opportunity for students to express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas in a creative and imaginative way. It allows them to explore their inner world and find their unique voice. By engaging in creative writing, students can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and gain confidence in expressing themselves.
  2. Creative writing encourages students to think critically and analyze various aspects of storytelling, such as plot development, character creation, and thematic exploration. It requires students to think deeply, make connections, and develop logical and coherent narratives. These critical thinking skills are valuable in all areas of life, not just in writing.
  3. Creative writing allows students to explore different perspectives and understand the world from various viewpoints. It encourages empathy and helps students develop a deeper understanding of human experiences, emotions, and diverse cultures. By creating characters and narratives, students can step into someone else's shoes and gain a broader perspective on the world around them.
  4. Creative writing fosters imagination and innovative thinking. It encourages students to think outside the box, generate new ideas, and explore unconventional solutions. These skills are essential for problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and adapting to an ever-changing world.

Summer provides opportunities for the interested students to further improve their creative writing skills. They can use some of their free time to write about their summer vacation and time spent with family and friends, they could share their exploration on new places visited and new friendships made.

CORPLUS offered some ideas for summer writing exercises. Here are some of them:

Where is your favorite place to go during the summer?

Write about your ideal summer day. What does it include?

What is your favorite family summer tradition?

Plan a “stay-cation” for the last week of summer. What will you do?

What is the best way to celebrate the end of summer?

What is your favorite summer memory?

How did you spend most of your summer?

We expect our participants to come beck refreshed and full of memories for the beginning of the new school year and participate successfully in 2024 BCWC.
