Nigeria Faces Severe Cancer Care Shortage

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you to the generous donor who has already supported the Cancer Treatment Centres for Nigeria project. We are grateful for this first contribution. However, the amount received is not enough to begin implementation. We are appealing for more donors who may be interested in helping us move this project forward.

Nigeria, with a population of over 250 million people, needs at least 250 cancer treatment centres according to the World Health Organization. At present, only three centres exist nationwide, and just two are fully operational. This severe shortage leaves many patients without access to timely diagnosis and treatment.

Cancer care remains out of reach for most Nigerians. Patients travel long distances to seek help, sometimes across several states. Many discontinue treatment due to high costs, lack of accommodation near treatment sites, or equipment breakdowns. The limited number of trained specialists and modern facilities contributes to preventable deaths.

This project seeks to establish and equip community-based cancer treatment centres across major regions in Nigeria. Each centre will provide affordable screening, diagnosis, chemotherapy, and counseling services. Training will be provided for local healthcare workers to operate and maintain equipment properly, reducing service interruptions and keeping care available within communities.

We kindly invite additional donors to join this effort and help bring life-saving cancer care closer to Nigerian families. By locating services closer to where people live, patients will spend less on transportation and lodging. Early diagnosis can become more common, and treatment can begin sooner. These centres are expected to serve at least 5,000 low-income patients each year.

May God bless you, and thanks for being so kind.
