Summary

Help us help elephants! Currently we are caring for 11 retired & rescued elephants at the Elephant Valley Project, while also operating a Mobile Vet Team. Previously reliant on tourism income, ELIE is feeling dramatic cuts in funding due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Funds raised will support the long-term care for elephants, critical vet programs and create resiliency and well-being within the vulnerable indigenous Bunong communities we work with, while the tourism industry recovers.

Challenge

Covid-19 is having massive impacts across Asia with elephant camps closing, owners and sanctuaries struggling for funding for their elephants. ELIE has historically not received external funding for the sanctuary, community and conservation projects, being solely reliant on the sustainable ecotourism model we have developed. Unfortunately, no tourists = no income. Budgets have been slashed for the elephants, as well as our community support & human healthcare access program.

Solution

Our goal is to sustain ELIE's innovative elephant welfare, community support and forest protection programs. The loss in income due to COVID-19 has severely impacted our organization's capacity to continue these successful programs. Through donations, grants and other funding sources; we can support the Bunong people and their elephants in surviving this period, while also finding new community-based solutions for resilient and sustainable elephant and community support programs.

Long-Term Impact

The crisis we now face due to this pandemic is extreme and challenging. Undoubtedly, this will not be the last our organization and the local communities will meet. As Cambodia continues to experience rapid deforestation and biodiversity loss, unfortunately further local crises and global threats may become a reality if we do not adapt and stay focused on the work needed. Surviving this period is critical to be able to continue helping Cambodia's last elephants and providing them sanctuary.
