Sight changes everything. When vision is restored, people return to work, care for their families, and participate in community life. In Tanzania, thousands live with preventable blindness because care is out of reach. Cataracts can be cured with a simple procedure, yet trained surgeons and equipment are scarce. This project provides high-quality cataract surgery while training the next generation of Tanzanian eye surgeons, building a health system that will continue this work tomorrow.
Tanzania has one of the highest rates of vision loss in the region. Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness, yet care is often out of reach, especially in remote areas. Untreated cataracts don't just affect one person; they disrupt entire families, pulling children from school & caregivers from work. In a country where 43% live in extreme poverty, blindness deepens hardship and limits futures. With <2 eye surgeons/million, Tanzania's health system cannot meet the need for care.
This project brings cataract surgery with high-quality visual outcomes to people in need, enabling them to regain their independence, return to work, and care for their families. Each procedure is also a hands-on training opportunity for Tanzanian ophthalmic residents and junior surgeons, building local surgical capacity. By combining direct care with mentorship and high standards, we strengthen the eye care system while restoring sight-now and for years to come.
This project transforms lives: restoring sight so individuals can return to work, care for family, and fully participate in their communities. At the same time, it builds national capacity by training Tanzanian eye surgeons who will go on to serve across the country. Each surgery helps one person today and equips the system to serve thousands more in the future.
