Established in 1988, the CDCC (Concordia Day Care & Community Center) has been serving 2,500 people in the Bangna Slum in outer Bangkok for nearly 30 years. Comprehensive community outreach includes day care for 60 kids, after school and Saturday classes for 100 kids, elder care for 40 people, and public health, vocational training, and other as-needed support for all 2,500 slum residents. The CDCC empowers children and adults in the slum to achieve their full potential through education.
There are currently 2,428 residents in the Bangna slum in outer Bangkok living in poverty with limited access to education & public health services. Without support in these areas, slum residents are unable to care for themselves and their families. They are also highly susceptible to social issues common in impoverished communities, including malnutrition, inadequate medical care and, illicit drug use and trade, and human trafficking & prostitution.
This project provides a path out of poverty through education and public health support for all residents of the slum, including everyone from malnourished babies to illiterate adults to elderly suffering from treatable conditions. Children who are nourished & safe & educated go on to achieve their full potential and break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families. Adults who are educated & healthy are also able to best provide for their families and improve their quality of life.
After serving this slum community for nearly 30 years, we have seen how individuals and families have broken the cycle of poverty and gone on to live fulfilling lives, through our education and public health programming. Children who attended our day care 30 years ago are now grown with university degrees, helping their families, with some also returning to volunteer and help at the CDCC where they were first supported. Tens of thousands of individuals have been impacted to date through the CDCC
