ABCN Update 2022

Many young women in low SES, remote/regional, First Nations and NESB environments lack access to female professional role models. Our scholarship exposes young, disadvantaged women to corporate environments where female professionals are valued. We intentionally match female students with female mentors. Female scholars benefit from a professional role model who can help break down stereotypes of traditionally male-dominated corporate cultures.

In 2021 the ABCN Scholarship Foundation awarded a record number of 42 Accelerate Scholarships after receiving 250 applications from 99 schools. This year, applications revealed a collective fear from young people about their future coupled with a 24% increase in those undergoing traumatic experiences. Every single application, without exception, shone out for the incredible hardships that our country's low SES student have gone through, and their impressive ability to overcome adversity.

Of the 2021 Applications recieved 71% were female and of the 42 scholarships awarded in 2021, 29 out of 42 were awarded to female students (69%). Your generous donations will help to support these wonderful young women.

Scholar Spotlight: Muskaan - 2022 Scholarship Winner

Muskaan arrived in Australia from India with her parents and 2 siblings in 2010. With little knowledge of the English language and an incredible responsibility as her family’s nominated translator, Muskaan had to work twice as hard to communicate both socially and academically.

Just over a decade later her perseverance has finally paid off with Muskaan receiving a ABCN Accelerate Scholarship for 2022. Muskaan's successsful application detailed her resilience, committment to education and her contributions to both her school and community.

‘My mother was never given the chance to achieve her full potential, her gender and circumstances meant that she didn't get to follow her dreams, or even get a chance to dream. This is why I would love to provide support for young girls in my community and show them success is possible no matter where you start.’

Scholar Spotlight: Haileigh - Year 2 Scholar

First Nations scholar Haileigh has aspirations of studying law at University and hopes to one day own her own law firm. In the past year she has been working particularly hard on her public speaking and debating skills with the help of her mentor Swetha.

Haileigh hopes to gain some financial relief through the program and have some guidance to assist in her senior years and transition to university.

"I like my mentor Swetha because she caters for my goals, both short term and long term, so that I can succeed to my greatest capabilities. The best part of the whole experience is how easy it was to communicate with her about my experiences and values both as a student and as an individual."
