Remarks and Gratitude

This report serves as an account of the Harvesters in Sport Trust from January 2022 to April 2022 as a member of the GlobalGiving community. It is with great pleasure that we present this report saying thank you all for supporting our causes. Your support and concern go way beyond comprehension as there is a positive impact noticed daily on the lives of the children under our care. Once again, we say thank you for the unwavering support, there is continuous improvement in our program and you made it all possible. You have been consistent in supporting us since the beginning and we appreciate your love.

Our main focus currently is on building a home/shelter for the children with the most needs of accommodation, food, clothing, and education. These extremely vulnerable children amount to up to 15 children in dire need of help. We are hoping to put a structure of at least 3 bedrooms to house these children. Also, trainings have been put in place with a social worker to teach volunteering house mothers home-based care to handle children properly. In addition, the social worker initiated the drive for birth certificates for our children, as some of them do not have those national documents.

Workshops

In search of growth and improvement for our Kids Program, we have engaged a Social Worker for a more effective and professional approach to our modes of operation. From the start of this year, we have managed to host 3 successful workshops. One workshop was held in late February the other in mid-March and early April. In these workshops, our volunteers have been equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to handle children better. These workshops are very relevant as we had volunteers with passion but not enough knowledge on how things go. For this, we are more than grateful as it gives us a more professional approach to our program and improves our operations.

Feeding Program

We are more than excited about our feeding program as we continue to drive toward our target to feed 500 kids daily. Through your support, there has been massive change and improvement in our feeding program. When we joined the GG community we would only feed children on weekends but now we are glad to say that we are now feeding children in dire need on a daily basis. The daily program caters to 70 children and weekends cater to 250 children on average. Our meals keep on improving to better menus for a balanced diet. Also, the industrial gas stove makes everything easy to cater to large numbers. Now we have a range of meals including cabbages, mince, soya chunks, beans, and green vegetables. However, our aim still remains to feed 500 kids daily. Thank you for your donations and contributions as you have made it all possible.

Laundry Program

Our laundry program has been continuously improving since its birth. We have increased the number of children falling under this program to 15 children. These 15 children are fully served under this program whereby they bring all their laundry and our volunteers take care of it. The rest get to have a few toiletries accompanied by hygiene lessons on those Laundry Thursdays. We are still struggling with the number of volunteers to take care of the Laundry Thursdays as most of them are occupied with the Feeding Program and Home Lessons. Our aim now is to get a number of washing machines to assist in boosting our program and involve all our children in the program. With enough assistance and contributions from you, we know this is achievable. Also, we are working on improving our toiletries supply for adequacy and proper hygiene in our children.

School Program

The scholarship program still requires intense funding to tackle tuition. Also, some of our children have graduated from primary school and moved on to secondary education where the rates are slightly higher than primary school rates. We are still struggling with adding more children to the scholarship program as we experienced some hikes in tuition fees. However, we have maintained to make sure no one is dropped out of the program and their fees are paid on time so as to avoid disturbances once they start school. Also, the children in the program are furnished with enough stationery. We remain grateful for your support as we manage to thrive through our program and maintain its main functions.

Home Learning

This program complements the scholarship program whereby our qualified volunteers administer lessons to our children. This program does not only carry subjects learned in school but also has experiential learning-based programs, grooming programs, and soft skills programs. This program is very essential as it prepares our children for life. Also, they are assisted in their studies, homework, and exam preparations. Our volunteers are equipped with relevant material to that children are not so far from the standard curriculum.

Sports and Games

This section is more attractive as we had fun tournaments and friendly matches in this quarter. We had 3 main sports in this quarter which are soccer, volleyball, and netball. Our soccer and netball teams have been successful in their competency levels. However, volleyball is still struggling as we do not have a volunteer with adequate experience to coach the sport. We had 3 main tournaments and our soccer boys topped all of them and our netball ladies managed to win 2 of the friendly tournaments. We are still requesting assistance to gather enough equipment so as to exploit our children’s full potential.

Though the situations get tough, together we have made it thus far. Lockdown measures for battling the novel coronavirus have been eased allowing us to re-engage the bulk of our programs back into action. However, we remain vigilant in the fierce battle against the pandemic, always teaching our children to exercise caution, avoid the further spread of the virus, and continue to remind them of the need to stay safe. We then seize this opportunity for life lessons and cultural cultivation concerning societal influence on child marriages and drug abuse. We try as much as we can to raise awareness and assist children educationally intellectually and socially. Once again, we say, Thank you!
