Feeding Program January to March 2024

It's with thankfulness and gratitude that I present our latest report. Our report as always is divided into segments to help with relating and better understanding. We have had a wonderful period and time with the children.

CONSTRUCTION

The construction work has stalled as we have not managed to raise any funds for the work to continue. Hopefully, in the next quarter, we can have positive feedback on it.

FEEDING PROGRAM

There have been a lot of achievements and improvements encountered from January to March 2024.  In January, the feeding program started with a bang on a new note with the restructured children’s program. Registration of the children to keep track of the number of children we deal with, as the number of children kept increasing and games, followed by the feeding of cooked meals daily. In this period we have had to grapple with feeding 100 children daily.

We however experienced some challenges despite all we have achieved in the term so far, challenges that do need attention as we soldier on into 2024.  These are the following challenges we are facing, the efforts to produce maize for Mealie meal and beans to be used for the children’s feeding program in our Horticulture project in Darwendale were thwarted as a result of the limited rainfall this year. We have a persistent drought ongoing.

We need to make improvements to the menu being offered to the children to provide a nutritional diet that comprises the key components required for healthy growth for growing children i.e. starch, protein, carbohydrates, and fats. To make sure they do not suffer from Malnutrition and Kwashiorkor.

Hence, we need to step up our fundraising to outsource these necessities to ensure food security for our orphaned and vulnerable children’s feeding program.  There is a need to provide adequate resources where food is concerned with the large turnout of children daily, material for the children’s program e.g. lesson visuals and worksheets, and sporting equipment are also of the essence. There are examination class children receiving scholarships from us that still need Birth certificates, and identification particulars which is a requirement.

LAUNDRY THURSDAY

Our clothes-washing project continues to ensure the children’s hygiene is in check every Thursday. Our team of volunteers has continued to gather clothes for washing and faithfully kept hygiene checks ongoing. We need to ensure the children bathe, brush their teeth, and wear clean clothes.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE COMPLIANT FILES PER CHILD

We are still in the process of trying to find a volunteer Social Worker to help get the program back on track.  The current social worker is back at school as she was a student on attachment. We aim to have 80 children documented. We are running out of time as the settlement is under threat of closure. We need to ensure every child is documented and readied for relocation with proper follow-ups. We aim to absorb some of them at the home we are drumming up support for.

We had intended to build a school first but we want to convert the school structure into a hostel and house the first batch of 12 kids and continue from there. We will then work on classrooms after ensuring a number of them are housed.

SPORTS ACADEMY

Due to a lack of new equipment and limited funding options, we have not been able to revive the sporting side of things during this period. We are hoping our fortunes change in the next quarter. Recreation is key for the children’s progress and development. While fun games have continued it will be good to have actual sporting activities return.

We would love to get them engaged in sporting tournaments and clinics again for their wholeness.

SCHOOL AND SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Our scholarship program is still running, and we would like to move it from just being a scholarship program to building a block of classes where our children can acquire academic and vocational training. The construction process is in limbo currently while renewed efforts remain under way to raise the requisite funds to resume everything.  meanwhile, the volunteering junior leaders are being groomed to be mentors of the students. and help them with their homework and exam preparation as a way to ensure the children pass.

RELOCATION PROGRAM

With the building project stalled, we are appealing to our friends to help us get back on track. We are now way behind schedule. Meanwhile, the matter of acquiring permits for the land space we were allocated by the local leadership continues. Once the relocation program is complete the children with nowhere to go will be sheltered.  We have identified 60 kids who will need a home. We need partners to help us build 5 hostels. Each hostel housing 12 children.

Then a primary school block, later a high school block, and much later a vocational training block.

The horticulture project to enrich the kids’ meals and an income-generating project, remains a priority despite the setback with the maize and the beans.  We managed to plant some cabbages and a few tomatoes which are coming up well.  We could expand this project with capital injection with the numbers of children to be fed growing.

DIGITAL LITERACY AND MOBILE LIBRARY

The mobile library project is still taking shape.  We are working and planning for it. Currently, it has very few books.  We however have continued sending word out for donated books to help us get started in our quest to promote a reading culture. The digital literacy program has been severely curtailed by the lack of electricity in the area. Power cuts have hit the area badly. We will need to raise funds for a generator or some sort of solar system.

Next month's highlights:

13 April 2024- children’s festival. This is a time for the children to showcase their talents through poems, skits, dramas, songs, and a lot of fun activities! Up to 500 children are expected!

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we are thankful for the help we have continued to get that has kept the feeding afloat and kids in school. we however to raise a bit more to get other programs back on track. With your help and continued support, we can achieve our ultimate goal of housing 60 children, building a school for them, and a vocational training center resulting in youths being equipped and independent to face the world.

The feeding program remains on track to eventually feed 500 children. Daily we now have 100 children getting a meal. As our capacity grows we will include more children. On the weekends we get as many as 200 showing up.   We hope to increase our efforts in fundraising for the work and the children’s sake. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support.
