Hard times for our girls and their families

By Eveli Leyva | Project Leader

Dear friend,

This year the families of Nueva Rinconada are experiencing an even more critical situation, due to the pandemic. This situation began on March 15, with the quarantine. The weeks went by and the money ran out.

Government subsidies for vulnerable househols did not reach all the families who really needed them. Most of the girls' families have had to create a community kitchen,to be able to cope with this quarantine, due to their limited financial resources and lack of food. In addition, our area does not have running water. In order to comply with the Covid-19 prevention regulations, they had to buy more water than usual, despite its price rising due to high demand.

Jugando Aprendo, in line with the prevention policy of the authorities, has temporarily suspended school reinforcement activities and workshops. Now, with the support of AGTR, volunteers and friends, we are delivering food baskets to families in need in our area. In addition, we are calling the girls who have participated regularly in our activities once or twice per month, to find out how they are and how virtual classes are going. Continuing to study has become a challenge: to attend classes remotely, they need a laptop and access to a smartphone with WhatsApp, none of which are accesible to them. Their parents live on what they earn day by day and now have no income due to unemployment. In addition, many mothers do not understand homeworks and have great difficulty in helping their daughters.

We are grateful for your support and we are working to contribute in every way we can to our local community. Together we will get through this.

Sincerely,

Eveli Leyva
