Will you be ONE of #90? That is the number of people we need to give a $10 donation on #GivingTuesday so that I can place a book into the hands of EVERY student participating in our prevention education this school year. #BeAGlobalGiver and that donation can unlock $500,000 in matching funds!
"My body belongs to me" is a message we share with students during our presentations and we teach them how people might use child luring as a way to cross those boundaries. Teaching children how to recognize these lures and empowering them to speak out is an important part of the process. "When someone tries to trick you or lure you, I want you to do 3 things, but we first start with our angry eyebrows because we are not falling for their tricks. Then we tell them 'NO!' then we 'Go!' and last we 'Tell' a trusted adult about the situation." The children love yelling those 3 empowering words. One first grader told our educator, "I'm giving such angry eyebrows that I can't even see anymore!" That statement made me chuckle, but then I realize what an impact this education is making in his life, now that he can connect with the message on a personal level. I am proud of the work we do and want the next child to have the same opportunity.
In two short weeks we begin this work in a new school district that has students at high-risk for sexual abuse. This community has few opportunities with lower socio-economic status, increase with drug and gang activities, with minority and language barriers. Please help us reach every child with this education, because at this point we don't have the materials we need for each ONE.
I love reading quotes about teamwork. Many times I see TEAM as an acrostic for "Together Everyone Achieves More." Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, defined teamwork this way;
"Coming together is a beginning,
Keeping together is process,
Working together is success."
Fair Haven, Lake County's Rape Crisis Center became a part of the Global Giving community and began this process with one project as a beginning. Now this Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Education project is number three for our agency. Child Sexual Abuse statistics are staggering and the number of substaintiated cases are increasing in Lake County, the second most populous county in Indiana. Unfortunately funding isn't matching the need for prevention education. Our education team is a staff of 3 people, sharing one office, working in a community of 183 public and private schools! We can not do this work alone, but by asking you to join us and become a part of this teamwork, we can achieve more.
