April is a busy awareness month. Not only is it Child Abuse Prevention Month but it is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Fair Haven’s Prevention & Education team are working hard to combat both for kids K-12. We have been visiting schools to spread awareness to children and teens about the behaviors that can harm them, and we have also taught them how they can help their trusted/safe adults to keep them safe too.
Often, when people learn about what we do, they say “thank you for what you do, that’s a hard job.” The truth is, it’s not a hard job to teach body safety to children and teens. What is hard is hearing a disclosure of a student that has been victimized. That is why we work so hard to spread awareness to youth about what abuse is and what they can do to help safeguard themselves, or, if they are survivors of abuse, that there are trusted adults that can help them.
The sad reality is that 95% of the time, a child is abused by someone they know, love, or trust, and that statistic is only the reported crimes. Many crimes go unreported, and abused children/teens age into adults who carry that secret with them for a very long time. The average age that a person finally divulges that secret is 52. 52! That is an extremely long time to hold on to a secret that causes mental and physical trauma throughout their lifetime.
Since July 1, 2024, the current academic year, our Prevention & Education team have presented to or spoken with over 22,000 school age children/teens, creating an impact on individuals, and always with the hope of preventing this crime from happening. We have visited 51 elementary, middle, and high schools and attended over 15 community events, spreading the word of prevention to all that we meet. We are a member of the Indiana Prevention Coalition where we and numerous other agencies across the State collaborate to bring prevention awareness to every public school that we can.
We have offered prevention education to schools, at no cost, since 2017 and through generous grants, donations, and sponsors, we’ll continue to provide child abuse prevention education free to schools. Generous supporters, like you, help the most, by supporting the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education project. We continue to add new schools to our presentation schedule every year. We would love to be in every single school in Lake County – but that would require adding staff to our small team of two – a goal that I would like to see achieved within the next 10 years!
As we transition to summer and the 2025-26 school year, we look forward to serving a growing number of students with a goal of reaching 26,000 children & teens. Below are photos from some of the schools and events that P&E attended this year.
Thank you for all you do to support our mission!
