After creating a model programme for street children in Birgunj, we decided it's time to help more children living on the streets and girls who have been victims of rape, domestic violence or trafficking in Nepal. We have opened a shelter for girls and the boys' one will be launched shortly. The Janakpur centre provides shelter, education, care, counselling, legal support when needed and skills training to the children to equip them for a successful future.
Janakpur, the location of the project, is the capital of Province 2, the smallest but most populous province in Nepal. There are more than 10,000 cases a year of violence against girls and women, the highest number of missing children in Nepal, approximately 400 children living on the streets, and 50% of children out of school.Due to political and other issues, there are very few organisations working in the area and none doing the same work as us.
Our Sansar together with our partner on this project, Pipal Tree, will solve the problem by opening two shelters - one for girls who have been victims of rape, trafficking and violence, and one for boys who have experienced homelessness, abandonment or child labour. The shelters provide care, education, skills training, counselling, legal support when needed and linking with the families where safe and possible.
We envision Janakpur free of street children and all the children living back with their families and fulfilling their dreams. Where linking with the families is not possible, we will prepare the children for an independent future and they will be provided with a loving home before they are adults and ready to live happy lives on their own. We aim to assist all girls that have been victims or rape, violence, trafficking at the shelter and in the community.
