The first Children's Heart pediatric cardiac surgery mission in Tanzania has come to an end, marking an important new chapter in our commitment to children living with congenital heart disease.
For the first time, our volunteer medical team worked at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma, alongside the local healthcare professionals. From the very beginning, the two teams worked side by side, sharing knowledge, clinical expertise and experience, while building a common approach to pediatric cardiac care. This collaboration is an essential part of our mission and contributes to strengthening local capacity and access to specialized treatment.
During the mission, six children with severe congenital heart defects underwent surgery. Behind each operation was a child and a family facing uncertainty and difficult choices. For them, access to specialized treatment meant much more than a medical procedure: it meant hope, a new possibility for life and the chance to look towards a healthier future.
Among the children treated was Amina (fictional name), a one-and-a-half-year-old girl from far away, who travelled around ten hours to reach Dodoma. Her family had faced a long journey of medical visits, travel, treatments and uncertainty before receiving a diagnosis of congenital heart disease. The mission gave Amina the opportunity to be assessed and treated by a specialized team. Her story reflects the challenges faced by many families for whom diagnosis and pediatric cardiac surgery remain difficult to access.
This first experience in Tanzania has shown the importance of combining medical expertise, local collaboration and long-term commitment. It represents an important first step towards making specialized pediatric cardiac care more accessible to children across the country.
We thank our donors for making this mission possible. Your support allows us to reach children who urgently need care, strengthen local healthcare teams and give families something invaluable: hope and the opportunity for a healthier future.
