CHILDRE'S HEART PROGRAM:UPDATE
The "Children's Heart Program" (Cuore di Bimbi), is one of the most significant and emblematic initiatives undertaken by Mission Bambini. Its primary objective is to provide vital care for children suffering from congenital heart disease (CHD), a condition that, if left untreated, can be life-threatening.
In many low- and middle-income countries, healthcare systems are often severely under-resourced, making access to specialized medical care a rare commodity. This scarcity leads to a troubling reality: congenital heart disease frequently goes undiagnosed or untreated, causing preventable deaths that disproportionately affect children. Mission Bambini's approach is designed to directly address this gap through a comprehensive, multi-faceted strategy grounded in three core pillars: providing life-saving cardiac surgeries, building local medical capacity, and preventing rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
At the heart of the program is its commitment to performing life-saving cardiac surgeries for children in need. However, the impact of the initiative extends far beyond immediate treatment. A critical component of the program is the investment in capacity building, which involves training local healthcare professionals—including surgeons, cardiologists, and other medical staff—in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric heart conditions. This focus on education and skills transfer ensures that over time, partner hospitals in these regions are empowered to independently manage cases of congenital heart disease, promoting the long-term sustainability of local healthcare systems.
Moreover, the program includes a crucial precautionary dimension, with an emphasis on preventing rheumatic heart disease (RHD). In countries such as Eritrea, where the risk of RHD is particularly high, early detection and prevention initiatives are essential. Through targeted screening programs aimed at children aged 6 to 10, Mission Bambini works to identify at-risk children early on, providing them with the care they need to avoid the onset of RHD and other related complications.
Collaboration with local governments plays an essential role in the program's success, as these partnerships help to ensure the continuity and expansion of healthcare services. By working hand-in-hand with national and regional authorities, Mission Bambini is able to create lasting change, building a foundation for a healthier future for children in these countries.
In 2023, the "Children’s Heart Program" (Cuore di Bimbi), achieved remarkable milestones. A total of 173 children underwent life-saving surgeries, providing them with a new chance at life. Additionally, 7,988 children were screened for heart conditions across 13 projects in six different countries: Eritrea, Uganda, Nepal, Kosovo, Albania, and Italy. These achievements reflect the wide-reaching impact of the program and highlight Mission Bambini’s unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of children in need.
