Workshops at Liceo Paula Jaraquemada

By Javiera Vitar | coordinator of the education area

Considering the experience in school workshops conducted during the years 2015/2022, three 60-minute school workshops were held, aimed at Third Year students, with the purpose of promoting engaged and responsible citizenship in public spaces. These activities were an integral part of the "Citizen Education and Road Safety" project, supported and funded by GlobalGiving. The project, designed to foster a preventive road safety culture, aims to carry out 50 annual workshops in schools in the Valparaíso, Metropolitan, and O'Higgins regions, reaching a total of 1,800 secondary students.

In the context of the Paula Jaraquemada High School, a space for face-to-face dialogue was created where topics related to road safety and essential preventive measures to raise awareness among Third Year students were discussed. Young people were encouraged to adopt safe and exemplary behaviors, with the aim of avoiding road accidents both as victims and as responsible individuals. This initiative aligns with the project's mission, which seeks to proactively address issues such as driving under the influence of substances or road incidents in general, ultimately aiming to promote a cultural shift towards safer road practices in society.

The results of a satisfaction survey conducted with attendees of school workshops for Third Year students show that the majority were not familiar with the Emilia Law before the workshop, but afterwards showed a very favorable opinion towards it. The perception of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was mostly negative. Everyone considered that an accident caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs should be classified as road violence. The majority rated the workshop as very good and expressed support for the institution to continue conducting such activities. As for recommendations to prevent road violence, they highlighted the importance of not driving under the influence of substances, being cautious when crossing the street, and educating about the risks associated with alcohol and drug consumption while driving. Participants expressed a high level of satisfaction and recognized the relevance of the workshop in raising awareness about the Emilia Law and preventing road violence.
