This project is based in Fangak County, South Sudan. It will provide sustainable access to the most basic necessities: clean water and food through farming for families displaced by civil war, flooding, tribal violence and the current conflict in Sudan.
Fifty-nine percent of the population in South Sudan lack access to clean drinking water. Waterborne diseases are a leading cause of death among children and the elderly. Four years of flooding have displaced nearly a million people in South Sudan. They have lost their homes, livestock, and livelihoods. This project provides new sources of clean water by drilling wells, as well as and seeds, tools and training to grow fruits and vegetables on small plots of dry land.
Families displaced by fighting in Sudan and flooding in South Sudan need access to the most basic necessities. This program will fund five new boreholes for clean water in places where the refugees have settled, and we will provide support to local farmers. We'll give them seeds, tools, and small farming equipment so that they can continue to grow more food for their families and the community. We will also offer training to the same farmers to help them through improved technique.
The new wells will provide ongoing access to clean water for up to 1500 people each. Many of the refugees plan on making Old Fangak their home. The clean water is the first step towards better health. The clean water means their children will no longer suffer from the water borne diseases which affect so many people in this region. The farming aid and training will help the refugees combat food insecurity.
