Summary

With the mission of "saving lives through health, clean water and agriculture," the Alaska Sudan Medical Project is a grassroots organization that works in a remote, impoverished village in South Sudan. Old Fangak has no infrastructure and little food or clean water. ASMP has helped changed that by providing clean water to 400 of the world's newest school children. We are not stopping there. This year we will drill MORE WELLS to give clean water to prospective students in surrounding areas.

Challenge

This region in South Sudan is one of the world's most impoverished and forgotten places. Children die needlessly of malnutrition and disease, which is made worse by a lack of clean water. In this area only 0.1% of people have clean drinking on premises, and over 40% have to travel more than a half hour for clean drinking water. With no roads, it is a logistically challenging place to work in, and as a result few other aid organizations have ever been to this area.

Solution

ASMP is assisting in building the village's first school which will serve several hundred school children each year. Along with this school, ASMP has drilled a water well so that the children can drink clean water and learn about hygiene. Without clean water and food, children will not come to school, and will continue to get sick from drinking Nile water. This year we are building THREE MORE WELLS in communities around Old Fangak to give more children a chance for a healthy future.

Long-Term Impact

Without education and health, there is little hope for long term change in South Sudan, or anywhere in the world. By making a difference early in a child's life, we can impact generations to come. There is no education system in this area, and the literacy rate is 16% More than 10% of children die before their 5th birthday. We have discovered that a primary source of this problem is a lack of clean water. With clean water for school children- A MOST BASIC HUMAN NEED- there can be new hope.
