Clean, abundant water for families in Gagnick Mack

Friends,

“CREATE! training programs are important because they teach us new skills and knowledge.” Yacine is a member of the CREATE! agricultural cooperative in the community of Gagnick Mack. She believes that CREATE! “should be a model of development throughout Senegal.”

Thanks to your generosity, the community of Gagnick Mack now has a fully installed solar water pumping system! Members of the village’s agricultural cooperative are thrilled to have access to abundant clean water and are very appreciative of CREATE!’s role in the effort. Women celebrated the pump installation with joyous singing and dancing! The Gagnick Mack garden cooperative is currently growing turnips, eggplants, peppers, African eggplants, okra, lettuce, and tomatoes in their garden site. In October, they harvested 270 pounds of okra and 12 pounds of eggplants. With the pumping system in place, cooperative members can now easily gather water from basins located throughout the garden site. With easier access to water, the Gagnick Mack garden cooperative will be able to greatly increase their vegetable production!

"Opportunity for All!"

“We are very excited about the long-term benefits of sustainable development!” Kiné is president of the CREATE! agricultural cooperative in the community of Darou Diadji. She believes that CREATE! training programs offer opportunity for everyone in her village. “Together,” she adds, “we can build businesses, create jobs, and ensure economic independence for all.”

Thanks to your generosity, the communities of Darou Diadji and Walo now have access to abundant clean water and have started growing vegetables in cooperative garden sites. In August, the agricultural cooperative in Walo harvested tomatoes, peppers, okra, watermelon, and almost 100 pounds of eggplant! Now that access to water is secure in these communities, cooperative members are able to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for their families and to sell in local markets. Cooperative members are also working with CREATE! staff to plant thousands of tree seedlings within the garden sites and throughout their communities. Trees provide shade, moderate temperatures, and produce fruit and nuts. They also serve as windbreaks and living fences in community garden sites.

While these communities continue to thrive, there are other villages that still need your help. Donations to CREATE! Matched Today at 50%

Darou Diadji now has clean, abundant water!

Thanks to your generous contributions and foundation support, CREATE! has ensured access to clean, abundant supplies of water for the community of Darou Diadji!

A large crowd of residents gathered in Darou Diadji in early July to assist with the installation of the solar-powered pumping system at the garden site’s newly rehabilitated well. As the pump started up and brought water 200 feet to the surface from a well that had been unused for some 20 years, community members could not believe their eyes! Residents could not imagine that it was possible to pump water from that depth using power generated directly by highly efficient solar panels, without the need for bulky, expensive, and short-lived batteries.

With your donations, we can expand this project and help other communities in Guinguineo District gain access to clean water. For today only, GlobalGiving is matching new donations to this project at 50%! Imagine – your donation of $100 today will become $150 that CREATE! can use to help communities like Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji gain new agricultural skills and economic livelihoods, made possible through solar-powered water pumps and gravity-fed irrigation systems in cooperative gardens.

Now that the solar pumping system is in place in the Darou Diadji garden, cooperative members will be able to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for their families and to sell in local markets. Project activities are also underway in the communities of Walo and Gagnick Mack. The Walo cooperative is already harvesting vegetables from their garden – even at the height of Senegal’s dry season. At the Gagnick Mack garden site, CREATE! technicians and community members are busy building water basins and a platform for the water reservoir, in preparation for the upcoming pump installation.
