Senegalese Communities Organize for Water Project

Friends,

Thanks to your generous contributions, CREATE! will be able to provide sustainable access to clean water for families in rural Senegal.  Through this project, CREATE! continues to strengthen and expand our partnerships with the rural communities of Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji.

Community members have already formed gardening cooperatives and are looking forward to growing their own vegetables using solar pumps and gravity-fed irrigation systems. But, the villages of Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji need your help to gain access to clean water!

Today, you can help these communities follow their dreams and feed their families. For today only, GlobalGiving is matching new contributions to this project!  Please help communities like Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji gain new skills and livelihoods through access to clean, abundant supplies of water.  With your generous donation, we can help make their dreams a reality!

Although CREATE! has not yet raised sufficient funds to install solar arrays and water systems in these communities, our skilled field technicians have spent the past months providing low-cost technical support and training for village residents.  In addition to cookstove training, CREATE! field staff are helping community members transplant tree seedlings during the rainy season.  Staff and community members timed tree planting to coincide with the rainy season so that rains can nourish the tree seedlings.  For the trees to truly thrive, however, the communities of Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji need continuous and reliable access to clean water.

Although this reforestation campaign has just started, these communities have each planted hundreds of trees.  Community members and field technicians have planted a variety of tree species, including papayas, flame trees, lemons, almonds, cashews, acacias, and mango.  In the future, cooperative members will harvest fruit and nuts from these trees.  Other species will provide shade, serve as windbreaks, and produce firewood in later years.

One community member told CREATE! field technicians: “I’m planning for the future now.  If you plan, you can have benefits for many years.  One way is by planting trees that will benefit our children and the environment.”

CREATE!’s beneficiaries truly appreciate your donation to help them on their way to self-sufficiency! So what’s next?  We would love to have you get more involved with CREATE! Send an email to kaitlyn@createaction.org and I will let you know all the different ways that you can help out! Be sure to stay updated with what’s going on with CREATE! by becoming our friend on Facebook, following us on Twitter, and checking out our blog!

Best wishes,

Kaitlyn Grigsby
