Clean Water for 1,500 People in Rural Senegal

“Our village needs trees to bring back the rain that has become increasingly rare.” Mbaye Gueye, the chief of Darou Diadji, is thrilled that CREATE!’s well rehabilitation in his community is underway. With access to abundant and clean water, and training from CREATE! field technicians, Darou Diadji will soon start a cooperative vegetable garden and tree nursery that will benefit the community for years to come.

Thanks to your generous contributions and foundation support, CREATE! can extend this project and help other communities in Guinguineo District gain access to clean water. For today only, GlobalGiving is matching new contributions to this project! Please help communities like Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji gain new agricultural skills and economic livelihoods, made possible through solar-powered water pumps and gravity-fed irrigation systems in cooperative gardens. With your generous donation, we can ensure that these families receive the help they need to improve their lives.

In Darou Diadji, community members and CREATE! field technicians have been preparing to rehabilitate the village well.  The well has been unusable for some time and will require extensive repairs. Two highly qualified well diggers living in Darou Diadji have generously donated their labor to complete the community well rehabilitation. Once well repairs have been completed, CREATE! will install the solar-powered water pump and community members will begin building the gravity-fed irrigation system in the Darou Diadji garden site.

Project activities are also underway in the communities of Walo and Gagnick Mack.  The Walo well is in good shape and community members have been working to build a platform for the water reservoir and to fence the cooperative garden site. Gagnick Mack does not currently have a well. Last week, CREATE! hired a qualified local technician who surveyed the Gagnick Mack garden site and determined the best place to dig the community’s well.

Thanks to your generous contributions and foundation support, CREATE! will be able to provide sustainable access to clean water for families in rural Senegal. Through this project, CREATE! continues to strengthen and expand our partnerships with rural farming communities in Senegal’s Guinguineo District.

Community members in Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji have already formed gardening cooperatives and started tree nurseries and are looking forward to growing their own vegetables using solar pumps and gravity-fed irrigation systems. CREATE!’s skilled field technicians will soon begin to install solar arrays and solar-powered water pumping systems in these communities. 

In December, CREATE! staff members met with leaders from each of these three communities to strengthen and formalize our mutual financial and technical partnerships. CREATE! Executive Director Barry Wheeler, on visiting these new partner communities, is “enormously impressed and inspired by the resilience, creativity, knowledge, dignity, and warm-heartedness of the villagers with whom we work and collaborate.”  Barry Wheeler and leaders from each community signed memoranda of understanding that outline CREATE!’s commitments to these villages and the responsibilities of Walo, Gagnick Mack, and Darou Diadji to work towards the programs’ success.  

With your help, we can extend this project and ensure that other communities in the Guinguineo District have access to clean water! Today, you can help these poor, rural communities follow their dreams and feed their families. This is the last day in 2014 to contribute to this project through GlobalGiving! Please help communities like these, where residents earn only about $350 a year, gain new skills and livelihoods through access to clean, abundant supplies of water.  With your generous donation, we can ensure that these families receive the help they need to improve their lives through sustainable agriculture.
