Summary

After 6 years of ongoing conflict, Yemen continues its standing as one of the world's worst humanitarian crisis, those displaced are some of the country's most vulnerable people. In 2021, 66% of the country's population will require some form of humanitarian assistance, and a staggering 14 million people are in acute need of assistance. This project will support the health of families through the provision of clean drinking water and basic hygiene items.

Challenge

Across Yemen, deaths caused by cholera have skyrocketed. There are nearly 4 million internally displaced people around the country and nearly half of the country does not have access to an improved water source. These conditions have led to more than 2.4 million suspected cases and more than 3,800 resulting deaths since the beginning of the outbreak in 2017. Food shortages caused by conflict mean that more than 16 million people will go hungry this year.

Solution

Family Emergency Kits (FEK) have been developed as a holistic solution to serve multiple needs faced by families in crisis. The main item included in an FEK is a water purification solution. Access to clean drinking water is essential for families in Yemen. An FEK will restore this access and support the health of families. Other items like basic hygiene supplies, Namene SM100 solar lights and Lucky Iron Fish may be added to the FEKs as needed to provide additional support to families.

Long-Term Impact

Using unsafe water and substandard hygiene facilities has dire consequences for the health and well-being of civilian populations, especially during times of war. With a collapsed health care system, there are not an adequate means for families to deal with the effects of water-borne diseases. With access to safe, clean drinking water, water-borne diseases can be avoided, keeping families healthier and allowing them to better manage the many impacts of prolonged conflict.
